Anyone knows if the mac pro allows us to upgrade to PCI graphics cards bought from retail stores? Will there be any driver issues? Do graphics card vendors include Mac drivers on their installation disc? Never seen one that does though..

I am professional editor. I get paid to edit. I just dont edit giant films. I think there is a little discrediting going on for what makes a professional editor.
I was in a discussion a year ago about all the new features that just got released. In the days of yesteryear, editor (film wise) would cut the film, then once they had a locked picture, they would add audio, color the film, sound effects and score.
However, a year ago during a project I found myself very angry at the way FCP was functioning given the way editors have to edit today. I have been a big FCP user for years and consider myself very experience on the software. I refer to the editing style of today, which is also being done in feature film editorial, that you are no longer just the film/video editor. YOU ARE the sound designer, the colorist, the composer, and the technician, at least at a basic level.
I feel that 10 years ago you would show a "rough" cut that was 50% done, no audio effects, color, or score, just the cuts and clients were possible able to get it. However today I feel that a rough cut needs to look more like 95% done. Many times when I show a client a piece of footage that doesnt look like an almost finished product, they get concerned on the final piece, even when you explain that is a rough cut.
So now that a lot of editor are having to show cuts that are almost done to get notes, the actual act of editing has become a nightmare to me. I have to move sounds, scores, titles, overlays, graphics all out of the way to make the simplest edit. Half the time, something gets moved that isnt supposed to. causing extra work. And I will be honest, sometimes, (which I know we all do....) I say good enough, because the actual act of moving a giant timeline around is just too painful.
    well not anymore (hopefully)
I want the freedom that this FCPX with hopefully provide. It seems to be changing with how many of us are going to have to start editing.
And of course one final thought. A good editor is a good editor, it is an art. Just because someone is an "expert" on AVID, PP, FCP doesnt mean they are an good editor. Same as someone who knows how to put paint on canvas isnt necessarily Van Gogh.
I think this version will help us tell stories easier and more efficient. It is still up to the editor what he/she will do with the tool.

    Nicely put.

I'm sure you're correct but I'm confused as to what results to believe.

I'm now using istat Pro, Temperature Monitor and Core2Duotemp. All are saying the same thing.

    See the screen grab below.

If I put the machine under stress it does go up to 50 or 60 degrees but generally, it's saying around 21 when idle.

Mine used to get stuck at low temperatures like that. It's a glitch in the CPU's measuring stuff.

Download the latest version of smcFanControl. It has a temperature reading, but uses a sensor on the logic board rather than the one on/in the CPU. I get a more accurate temperature now. With my minimum fan speed at 2500rpm, I get idle of around 46C. and gets up to about 77/78C when pushed, but of the course the fan kicks in then and keeps it in check.

I'm also curious about some people likening the fan in the MB to a jet engine. As mine spins up, i can hear a faint whine that sounds a bit like a jet engine, but as it gets faster, all I hear is the 'woosh' of air.

..hmm... as many of you know .mac has really been struggling in the past few months.

    Prediction:

Steve will announce an all new .mac service, with web based applications reserved solely for .mac members. Also a new feature will be the ability to store videos on your .mac which can be streamed to your iphone and AppleTV 2.

    j.

    These would be nice.

Also direct machine to machine syncing, synching to iphone/touch would be very nice.

Apple also doesn't have to sell their products in every store. I am sure Apple could say that they couldn't do that if they want to continue selling the iPad 2. I'd be very surprised if Apple knew about this and allowed it.

My guess is that since managers are pressuring the sales staff to sell the add-ons so hard, that they are just saying its required.

Working in a retail shop (photo goods); I can say that margins on hard goods is so razor thin, requiring ad-ons makes sense. It also keeps scalpers away for the likes of the iPad 2.

I think one of the main reasons Apple won't allow flash is because of Video. They don't want Hulu and other free movie sites competing with iTunes for the iPhone. At&t would also go crazy knowing that sites like UStream and Cnn live could stream live video over their network. Agree?

"Jesus the Son of God" derives his very legitimacy through the alleged fulfilling of Old Testament prophecies. For a Christian to "avoid reading the old testament" is surely to deny his paternity.

Excellent point Skunk and I agree completely. Believers should make it priority to read and understand all of God's word, but unfortunately, like anything in life, sometimes we avoid what we find difficult , what we don't understand, or what we don't enjoy.

The sad fact is that many people who profess to be followers of Jesus don't spend the amount of time in the Bible that they should. It's not just an old vs. new testament thing it's a reading and studying the Bible at all thing. I know I'm not telling you anything that you don't already know as we have discussed it before in other threads. Christians who don't understand or know their faith well sometimes do more harm than good by spreading misinformation. If they would actually deepen their relationship with God through consistent time in his word then they would be a better representation of the truth the scriptures lay out.

However, I should point out that faith is a growing process. The goal is that people will mature in their faith over time as they grow in knowledge of and relationship with the Lord. I am not discouraged by new believers who are just starting out on in their walk with Christ. It's the long time believers who have neglected God's word or chosen to adhere to tradition over revealed truth that frustrate me.

Manufacturing requires a lot of labor too.Sorry to burst your bubble again, but not all manufacturing requires a lot of labor. Painting all manufacturing processes with a broad brush is disingenuous. I've seen my share of robotic assembly lines, and as far as I'm aware, robots are not labor.

They don't have my money yet.;)
But not because they aren't the fastest thing around, I don't want that right now, I want a Cube and you know that's not going to be the fastest thing out there, It's going to be the fastest thing out there in an 8-inch cube.:p

Personally, I don't need a lot of speed and power right now, but I'm really getting into multimedia stuff (mostly animated GIFs now, but that's just the beginning) and most people don't need that kind of power, 800Mhz should be enough for the avererage user but if you're going to be doing some serious multimedia work, then you need all the speed you can get and that's my issue.
Who do we have to blame for the lack in speed at the moment?
I never said that their strategy is flawed, after all, Apple's goal shouldn't be to defeat Intel or Microsoft, it should be the best and fastest at what they do and right now, they're not.
Photoshop will run faster on a top of the line PIV than a top of the line Mac.
Plus, 3Ghz looks a helluva lot faster than dual 1.25 Ghz no matter how little the difference in performance may be.
Like it or not, that's how the PC world thinks.
    In Ghz.
And that's where Apple is falling behind.
They have an OS that's at least 10 years ahead of anything else out there, top of the line multimedia apps for the consumer and pro user and well-integrated hardware and software, but they are falling behind in the speed department and that's going to hurt both their marketshare and their image and how a companies products look is what people first see when they're shopping around for a new computer and now Apple's don't look like the best deal out there.

Thats a big expense and a very big risk. I dont think so.

Did you read the recent article on the history of the iPhone?

If i read it correctly i think it said in it that while negotiating with the carriers they said they were more then willing to buy up minutes and become a carrier themselves

You have to consider the problems that Apple has had with heat and portables of late. There would likely be heat issues with such a portable, which makes it even more plausible that Apple won't make such a portable.

The MBP core 2 duo, which just came out. has very good heat protection. it is nowhere as hot as the powerbook or version A, macbook pro.

I am sure that the macbook will also be a much better version of what is out now.

Not sure about Voice Control... No matter how well it works, I will probably feel strange taking to a phone. And most of the time it's just easier to press a button than to say it.

This might be in response to Google's voice thing though, which also recognizes "Plain English" and works with speech-to-text instead of typing. This might be something cool for writing text messages and stuff like that, as typing on the iPhone isn't the best.

Actually, I've tried the Siri App, and the speaking part became pretty natural to me. But you could type stuff into it too. While it's currently very limited, the cool part was the contextualized searches and the potential that can have. Imagine a program that can access your calendar, notes, texts, Facebook, etc. through APIs and then be able to search for things accordingly. Like say you want to watch a certain movie tonight, it searches your calendar info to see where you're going to be tonight and finds the closest movie theater. Many other possibilities would make this awesome, perhaps especially in some good app developers' hands.
